RENAISSANCE and BAROQUE ART
"During the Renaissance, famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli knew about the Golden ratio and used it in their paintings." (acunix.wheatonma.edu)
During the Renaissance and Baroque Eras, the use of the spiral as a patten remained prominent; however, the spiral also began to be used in more sophisticated ways. Significantly, the re-discovery of Greek proportion and new understanding of mathematical rules led to the widespread use of the concept of "The Golden Ratio" as a technique for creating artistic balance and beauty. The examples chosen here demonstrate how Renaissance and Baroque artists employed the spiral, as a motif and as a concept, in a multiplicity of ways.
